Abstract

1,217,347. Spray carburetters; treating I.C. engine charge. ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO. April 3, 1968 [June 21, 1967; Sept. 7, 1967], Nos. 28563/67 and 40970/67. Heading F1B. A bed 21 of material, e.g. coco-nut, coal or peat charcoal or silica gel, capable or reversibly absorbing or adsorbing fuel vapour from the fuel tank 17 and/or the float bowl of the carburetter 13, communicates with the mixture duct 12 and the atmosphere. The fuel vapour from the float bowl and fuel tank passes into the bed 21 through perforated pipes 22 and 27, e.g. ring shaped, located at or near the top of the bed and when the engine is running the vapour is drawn from the bed into the air cleaner 11. A valve member 42 may control the connection of the float bowl to the mixture duct 12 direct through pipe 44 or through the bed 21 in accordance with the manifold pressure transmitted to the valve actuating plunger 38 through the pipe 40. The bed 21 is contained in a container 20 and rests on a screen (31), Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), of fine mesh textile material supported by a dished metal screen (32). The top of the bed 21 is covered by a screen (33) of fine mesh textile material and a metal mesh screen (34) pressed downwardly by resilient metal mesh (35) trapped by the top of the container. The tube 24 connecting the bed 21 with the air cleaner 11 may be of plastics material reinforced with nylon thread and may contain a restriction (25), Fig. 1 (not shown). The pipe 26 between the fuel tank 17 and the bed 21 has an expansion chamber 47 to prevent liquid fuel flowing to the bed.
