Abstract

1345834 Cooling gears FALK CORP 31 May 1972 [28 June 1971] 25425/72 Heading F4U [Also in Division F2] Gearing in a housing 1 is cooled by a closed recirculating air cooling system comprising an external heat exchanger 18 to which air is supplied through a duct 17 by a fan 11 mounted adjacent suction ports 13 in the housing 1, the air being returned to the housing 1 through a duct 19. The fan 11 is mounted on the end of an input shaft 5. Lubricating oil is stored in the bottom of the housing 1. Alternatively, the fan 11 may be driven by an electric motor. The heat exchanger 18 comprises a substantially cylindrical chamber 22 containing a sinuous fluid tube 25 on which a plurality of cooling fins 26 are affixed and through which preferably cool water is circulated. Oil droplets are returned to the housing 1 through a tube 30. A modified form of heat exchanger comprises a chamber 33 containing a plurality of fins 34 extending lengthwise of the chamber 33 and by means of which heat is transmitted to the wall of the chamber 33. A tube 36 returns oil to the housing 1.
