Abstract

1345704 Battery charging systems BARDIC SYSTEMS Ltd 7 May 1971 [11 May 1970] 22569/70 Heading H2H Apparatus for charging a battery comprises means for discharging the battery to a predetermined voltage, means responsive to the battery voltage reaching this value for initiating a charge at a predetermined rate and timing means for substantially reducing the charge after a predetermined time. At the end of a charging period contacts 24/1, 24/2 of a manually operated switch will have assumed a position on opposite ones of the switch blades 23, 27 to those which are in contact with contacts 17/1, 17/2 of a timer having a cam 17 driven by a motor 16. When it is desired to commence a charging process for a battery 29 the contacts 24/1, 24/2 are moved so as to contact those members of blades 23, 27 which are contacted by contacts 17/1, 17/2. With an A.C. source connected to terminals 12, 13, the output of a rectifier 10 energizes a relay 33 by way of resistors 34, 37 and contacts 17/2, 24/2 to close contact 33/3 and open contact 33/1. The battery 29 then discharges through resistor 37 and maintains the relay 33 energized. The battery discharges to a voltage at which it no longer maintains the relay 33 operated whereupon contacts 33/1, 33/2 close. The battery 29 then charges at a high rate by way of resistor 30, a diode 31 and contacts 17/2, 24/2 whilst at the same time the timer device 16, 17 is energized. After a predetermined time the cam 17 rotates to a position in which it moves contacts 17/1, 17/2 to the other of the blades 23, 27 whereupon the timer device is de-energized and the charge of the battery reduced to a trickle charge by way of an indicator lamp 32.
