Abstract

1366619 Blasting apparatus comprising D.C. to D.C. conversion BENDIX CORP 15 Nov 1972 [23 Nov 1971] 52783/72 Headings H2H and H2F A blasting machine for detonating blasting caps or squibs connected to terminals 190 comprises a capacitor 153 which is charged from a D.C. supply 140 by way of a solid state oscillator 1 and a transformer 150 a pulse generator 5 having a gaseous breakdown device 170 being provided to generate a plurality of pulses when the capacitor 153 has been charged to a first predetermined level, the pulses being fed to a triggered gaseous breakdown device 180, breakdown of which allows the capacitor 153 to discharge and fire the blasting caps, the machine being provided with a further gaseous breakdown device 160 having a somewhat higher breakdown value than that of the device 170 so that the charge acquired by the capacitor 153 is prevented from exceeding a second predetermined level, higher than the first predetermined level. In the OFF position a switch 9 has a lower contact by means of which the capacitor 153 is discharged when the machine is switched off. A manually operated switch 181 may be provided whereby triggering of the device 180 by the trigger circuit 5 may be controlled manually and the switch 181 may be provided with a lower contact which is in series with the lower contact of the switch 9. When the switch 9 is in the ON position the short circuit is removed from the capacitor 153 and the battery 140 is connected to the oscillator 1. Transistor 121 then conducts with the subsequent conduction of transistor 103 whereupon current flows in the primary winding 101 of transformer 150. With current flowing in winding 101 the transistor 121 gradually returns to the non-conductive state, at which the transistor 103 becomes non-conductive. The energy in the winding 101 then discharges through diodes 104, 106, 110 and resistors 111, 112 thus inducing an output pulse in the secondary winding 151 which charges the capacitor 153 by way of a diode 152.
