Abstract
1345664 Universal joints OVERLOAD DEVICES Ltd 26 July 1972 34933/72 Heading F2U A universal joint comprises input and output members 1A, 1B each with a pair of arms 3 interdigitated with the arms of the other member, and in contact therewith at surfaces 4 which each form part of a cone with a 90 degree apex angle and axis intersecting the axes of rotation where they intersect, there also being a central body 5 of square cross-section (e.g. a cube, possibly with chamfered rounded corners) with diametrically opposite pairs of faces 10 in close sliding contact with corresponding inside surfaces 11 on the pairs of arms. The arms 3 may be pivoted to the body 5 either via 7, (8) Fig. 3 (not shown) countersunk head screws, Fig. 7, or socket head screws 23, Fig. 8. The joint may be enclosed in a flexible sleeve (19) Fig. 4 (not shown) clamped on the members 1A, 1B at annular depressions (1) by annular bands (18) depressing the sleeve (19).
