Abstract

1345394 Hemostatic clip holder CODMAN & SHURTLEFF Inc 19 May 1971 [20 May 1970 28 April 1971] 15785/71 Heading A5R A holder for surgical clips 20 and from which they may be withdrawn in the jaws of a clip applicator (11) comprises a housing 12 having supporting members 18, 19 for the ends of the clips, and a clip forming element 10 which is mountable in the housing and has a V- or U-shaped projection 36 arranged to bear on the clips and bend them towards a V- or U-shape. The housing 12 may be divided into a plurality of pockets by spacing members 30, each pocket being intended for a single clip. Each spacing member has a slot (26) cut in it, the slots being aligned to form a channel (27) into which is received the projection 36 of the clip forming member. The combination of the pocket shape and the natural resilience of the deformed clip keep the clip locked in position, and correctly aligned for easy removal. In order to remove a clip from the holder (see Fig. 10) the jaws (40, 41) of a clip applicator are thrust into the front of the holder, between two adjacent spacing members, thus bending the clip around the projection 36. This action completes the formation of the clip and releases it from the shoulders so that it may be withdrawn from the holder. The outer surface of the clip may carry projections at its ends to mesh with complementary projections on the jaws of the clip applicator and thus positively locate the clip within the jaws (see Figs. 15-20, not shown).
