Abstract
1345154 Dynamo-electric machines DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 20 May 1971 [20 May 1970] 24441/70 Heading H2A The stator 8 and rotor 2 of a D.C. machine have an intermediate rotor 7 disposed between them which is driven at a lower speed than the rotor 2 and is connected to the stator by brushes 20 and to the rotor 2 by brushes 16. As shown, the machine is of the homopolar type with drum rotors and superconducting field windings 4 cooled by liquid helium, the rotors having part-spherical recesses to accommodate the field windings. Rotor 7 is driven from the machine shaft 6 through a gear train 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, 12, 14, 15 and rotates at substantially half the speed of rotor 2 resulting in a low relative speed between the brushes and copper layers 21, 17 which they contact. The inner rotor may be discoidal.
