Abstract
1345031 Cutting by plasma arc ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 4 Jan 1972 [4 Jan 1971] 344/71 Heading B3V [Also in Divisions B4 and H5] A workpiece is cut by a plasma arc torch by placing it at or near the centre of a high pressure region 32 of a supersonic plasma jet issuing from the torch nozzle 21. A gas such as argon, nitrogen or a mixture of these containing 70% or 90% argon, is fed through an inlet 17 and holes 18 into a gas dispenser 14, from which it leaves via holes 19 to be funnelled by an insulating shroud 20 into the nozzle 21 where a gas pressure above 30 p.s.i. is produced. The workpiece such as metal foil or cloth is positioned at the centre of the high pressure region 32 nearest to the nozzle 21 of the supersonic plasma jet produced. The throat 22 of the nozzle 21 has an included angle of at least 60 degrees, e.g. 80 degrees and a cylindrical bore 23 having a diameter of 0À5 mm. and a length of at least 1 mm., e.g. 1À78 mm. The nozzle 21 is screwed to a water cooled mount 24 which is secured, together with an adaptor ring 31, to the shroud 20 by a ring 30. The torch also includes a moulded plastics body 10 screwed to a moulded plastics cap 11.
