Abstract
1344609 Priming compositions and propellants AVIATION MINISTER OF 16 Nov 1960 [21 Aug 1959] 28752/59 Heading C1D A plastic or rubbery priming composition for pyrotechnics comprises a mixture containing an oxidizing agent, elemental boron, and a plastic or rubbery binder. Preferred proportions by weight are 40-75% oxidizing agent, 15-30% binder, and 10-25% boron. Suitable binders are polysulphide rubber, which may be co-cured with an epoxy resin, polyurethane rubber, plasticized cellulose acetate cross-linked to form a rubber, polyisobutene, and polypropene. The oxidizing agent may be an ammonium, alkali metal, or alkaline earth metal nitrate or perchlorate, or an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal chlorate. Mixing of the ingredients may be carried out under vacuum and the mixture then cured by heating. A curing agent and a wetting agent are optional additives. In examples, the oxidizing agents are potassium perchlorate and strontium nitrate; one of the products may be spread on butter muslin for use as an alternative to primed cambric, and another product may be used as a loose granular propellant for the ejection of stars.
