Abstract

1344198 Gas liquefaction process ESSO RESEARCH & ENG CO 19 April 1971 [9 Feb 1970 (2)] 21059/71 Heading G4P Cooling of a compressed feed gas, e.g. natural gas stream 2 Fig. 1, to its liquefaction temperature is effected by passage through at least two series-arranged heat exchangers 100, 102, 104, 106 traversed by a multicomponent refrigerant stream in a closed circuit; the feed stream 2 and the refrigerant stream 24 delivered by a compressor 130 being cooled by passage through exchanger 100, the so-cooled feed stream and at least the gaseous phase of the so-cooled refrigerant stream being further cooled in one or more of exchangers 102, 104, 106 traversed by counterflowing liquid refrigerant having been flashed at values 120, 122, 126 and the sovapourized flashed refrigerant being returned through a line 20 to compressor 130. Exchanger 100 may be cooled by a second evaporating refrigerant, e.g. propane in a circuit 75, 76 or by flashing at 280, Fig. 2, liquid refrigerant withdrawn at 270 from a phase separator 234 supplied with partly condensed refrigerant leaving the aftercooler 232 of compressor 230. In a further modification the part-liquid partgaseous refrigerant is separated prior to being cooled in the first exchanger.
