Abstract

1343986 Centrifugal pumps; hydraulic turbines P HAYWARD 19 April 1971 [24 March 1970] 24490/71 Heading F1C and FIT A pumping device for liquid in a pipe comprises at least one pump, the rotor of each stage of which carries paddles 5 which pivot simultaneously about respective shafts located on a cone of revolution whose axis coincides with the rotor axis, the paddles being pivoted by servomotors controlled by regulating means sensitive to the flow measured by sensors located in the pipe in the vicinity of the pump for measuring flow rate, suction and delivery pressure to control the paddle position corresponding to the desired flow. The position of paddles 5 is controlled by the servomotor (not described), which may be in the rotor or externally of the pump, through pinions or helical ramps in accordance with one or more of the following:- suction or delivery pressure, temperature, density, viscosity or flow either locally or through a centralized control when one or more pumps are in a pipeline. The regulating device for the paddles may comprise a cam and follower mechanism or an analogue or numerical calculator. The pumps may be single or multistage arranged in parallel or series or used with conventional pumps. The control system may permit the paddles to be used as a valve or as driven blades to brake liquid flow and to generate electrical power to recover energy.
