Abstract

1343784 Lithographic printing process ING C OLIVETTI & C SpA 14 Jan 1971 [15 Jan 1970] 1956/71 Heading B6C [Also in Divisions C4-C5] A reverse lithography printing process in which a printing master is used comprising a base support sheet of a synthetic organic resin having a surface preferentially wettable by a non-polar hydrophobic liquid and an image pattern comprising a resin binder fused to the sheet and having a roughened surface for preferentially accepting a hydrophilic ink, comprises the steps (i) applying a waterimmiscible hydrophobic liquid to the surface of the master, (ii) applying a hydrophilic ink comprising a colouring substance in a watermiscible vehicle and 0À1-20% by wt. of linseed oil, castor oil, coconut oil, oleic acid and tall oil fatty acid as an additive which is insoluble in the vehicle but soluble in the hydrophobic liquid, (iii) placing an ink-receiving sheet in contact with the inked surface of the master, and (iv) transferring ink from the master to the said sheet. The water-miscible vehicle may comprise triethylene or polyethylene glycol and shellac or a polyethylene imine resin, and the colouring agent may be an acid dye. The printing master may be prepared as in Specification 1,211,112, i.e. by transferring the image areas of the photo-conductive layer of an electrophotographically-produced copy to a base transfer sheet. The master may be used in the system of Fig. 2, in which the ink and hydrophobic liquid are separately applied to the plate, or in that of Fig. 3, in which they are premixed before application. In Fig. 2, hydrophilic ink from supply 22 is applied to plate 10 by rollers 24, while hydrophobic liquid in 28 is simul. taneously applied to 10 by rollers 26. Sheet 30 for printing is fed between impression cylinder 32 and plate cylinder 20. Alternatively the ink can be transferred to a blanket cylinder and printed by offset. In Fig. 3, hydrophobic liquid, e.g. hydrocarbon oil, is applied to roller 36 and milled into the ink by successive rollers 34 before application to plate 10.
