Abstract
1343637 Coating ceramic with gold: recovering Pt group metals ENGELHARD MINERALS & CHEMICALS CORP 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 23128/71 Headings C7D and C7F A process for recovering platinum metals entrained in a hot gas stream comprises passing the gas through a gettering device in the form of an inert ceramic honeycomb structure 1 which is coated with a getter containing gold to absorb the platinum, thereafter removing the coating and platinum from the structure 1 with an acid, and recovering the gold and platinum from the acid. In a method of producing a gettering device having a uniform coating comprising gold, the said honeycomb structure, having a previously determined total volume of the channels 4, is contacted by a volume of an organic solution of gold equal to said total volume, said solution comprising an organic gold compound in ahighly volatile organic solvent, the volatile organic solvent being evaporated and the structure being then fired to deposit the uniform coating of gettering material comprising gold. The hot gas stream carrying the platinum emanates from a catalyst bed used e.g. for producing nitric acid, hydrocyanic acid or in an ammonia-oxidation reaction wherein a cataclytic gauze made of platinum-rhodium alloy is used. A weld-barrier screen may be placed between the catalyst and the getter. The getter coating may also inculde, silver, palladium, platinum and alloys thereof, and minor amounts of rhodium, ruthenium and iridium to impart thermal stability to the gold coating. Base metals may also be added to the gold and to improve the adherence and coherence of the coating, oxides of bismuth, chromium, silicon, vanadium and tin, and mixtures thereof, are added. The getter honeycomb structure is formed from an inert ceramic e.g. alpha-alumina, zirconmullite, high aluminas and glass-ceramics. Commercial materials Cercor and Alsimag are quoted as examples. The volatile organic solvent used with the gold compound can be chloroform 3, ethyle acetate, benzene and carbon tetrachloride. The gold and platinum are removed from the gettering structure by aqua regia acid.
