Abstract

1365170 Intermetallic compounds GES FUER KERNFORSCHUNG mbH 18 April 1972 [30 March 1972] 17939/72 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C7 and G6] Intermetallic compounds, especially those of lithium, calcium, strontium, or barium with rhodium, palladium, iridium or platinum, are produced by a method which comprises mixing at least one Group VIII metal with at least one compound of another metal, and treating the mixture in a stream of highly purified hydrogen at 800‹ C. or above. The highly purified hydrogen may be produced by diffusion through heated nickel capillaries, or in a hydrogen/ nitrogen mixture obtained from sodium-dried ammonia, or by passing commercial hydrogen through a platinum asbestos/titanium sponge at 650‹ C., over molecular sieves, and then through liquid sodium/potassium alloy. Particular examples illustrate the preparation of LiPt7 from Li2O and Pt powder, and of CaPt2 from CaF2 and Pt powder. Other compounds specified fall within the general formula AyBx, where B signifies the Group VIII metal, A the other metal, x is 2, 3, 4, 5 or 7, and y is 1, 2, 3, 5 or 7. These intermetallic compounds may subsequently be decomposed under vacuum at a higher temperature, the evaporated metals being obtained in high purity by cooling while the Group VIII metals are recirculated.
