Abstract

1343126 Bleaching of lignocellulosic material CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd 7 Jan 1971 [8 Jan 1970] 733/71 Headings D1L and D1P A process for treating lignocellulosic material comprises the steps of (1) continuously introducing an aqueous lignocellulosic pulp to a pressure vessel, (2) admixing the pulp with an aqueous solution or suspension of an alkaline material, (3) contacting the alkaline pulp in the reacting vessel with oxygen or an oxygen containing gas at supra-atmospheric pressure and elevated temperature and (4) continuously withdrawing the oxygen treated pulp from the pressurised reaction vessel, the introduction and withdrawal of the pulp from the reaction vessel taking place continuously while the vessel is maintained under supra-atmospheric pressure. The oxygen containing gas may be air and the alkaline material may be sodium hydroxide, sodium carbonate, calcium hydroxide or a mixture of calcium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. An apparatus for carrying out the continuous treatment of lignocellulosic material with oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas comprises (1) a pressure vessel 6, (2) means 11 for supplying oxygen, or an oxygen containing gas to the vessel under supra-atmospheric pressure (3) means 4, 5 for introducing continuously aqueous lignocellulosic pulp into the vessel 6 (4) means, 11, for supplying alkaline reagent to the vessel, (5) means, 10, for heating the contents of the reaction vessel, (6) means 12, for agitating the contents of the pressure vessel so as to renew continuously the interface between the lignocellulosic pulp and the gas (7) means for controlling the residence time of the lignocellulosic pulp in the reaction vessel and (8) means 20, for withdrawing continuously oxygen treated lignocellulosic pulp from the pressurised vessel. Instead of the rotary pocket valve, 5, a high density pump can be used and the rotary pocket valve 20 can be replaced by a butterfly or grate. In another embodiment there may be provided means for controlling the partial pressure of the oxygen in the vessel. The pressure vessel which may be multi-compartmented is provided with mechanical agitators in each compartment, a plurality of perforated plate air dispersing members and draft tube air dispersing members. The vessel may be toroidal in shape and in the case of a single compartment vessel there may be provided means for dispersing oxygen or an oxygencontaining gas which is adopted to mix the contents of the vessel. In a further embodiment there is provided means for recirculating alkaline aqueous liquor separated from the lignocellulosic pulp withdrawn for the vessel.
