Abstract

1346039 Magnesium bisulphite and carbon; purifying waste liquids INSTITUT FUR ZELLSTOFF UND PAPIER 28 July 1972 35365/72 Headings C1A and C1C Waste liquors from the production of cellulose that contain magnesium are treated at an elevated temperature and under a pressure sufficient to keep the liquor substantially liquefied with an oxygen containing gas until the organic material present has formed an insoluble, carbon-like residue which is filtered off, heat liberated by the oxidation maintaining the temperature, then Ca(OH) 2 is added to the filtrate to precipitate (MgOH)2 which is filtered off, suspended in water and sulphited with SO 2 to produce a fresh digestion liquor for celloluse production. The Ca(OH) 2 may be added in two stages. Before the second stage a Mgcontaining salt may be added to make up any losses incurred in the cellulose production. The carbon-like residue obtained may be activated with steam or by pasting with ZnCl 2 and heating, and may be used to purify the filtrate.
