Abstract

1342962 Laminating apparatus and method KANNEGIESSER MASCHINENFABRIK GmbH 19 April 1971 [13 March 1970] 23937/71 Heading B5N A method of adhesively joining a facing piece 10 of flexible sheet material, e.g. a fabric facing to a backing piece 11 of textile sheet material; e.g. an interlining, having a heat-activatable adhesive previously applied to one face thereof, comprises conveying the pieces on a conveyer belt 14 in superimposed relationship with said one face of the backing piece adjacent the facing piece, at a uniform rate through a hot pressing station 12 to a cooling station 13, the facing and backing pieces in the hot pressing station being pressed together and heated between complementary curved surfaces one of which is provided by the conveyer belt, in such a way that the backing piece is disposed on the concave side of the facing piece. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises conveying means for conveying the superimposed pieces through a hot pressing station 12 and thence into a cooling station 13, said conveying means including an endless conveyer 14 passing through the hot pressing station and the cooling station, said belt running around part of the periphery of a cylinder 18 in the hot pressing station and the portion of the belt running around the cylinder forming a first pressing surface 16, a second pressing surface 17 in the hot pressing station being formed (Fig. 1) by the part of the periphery of the cylinder around which the belt runs, orbeing formed (Fig. 2) by a further belt 27 bear ing against the surface of the conveyer belt remote from that which engages the cylinder, whereby both pressing surfaces follow the same path in the hot pressing station and bear upon one another in the hot pressing station, means (not shown) for continuously driving the conveyer belt continuously so that superimposed backing and facing pieces can be conveyed through the hot pressing station while being pressed together between the pressing surfaces, means 15 for heating the superimposed backing and facing pieces while they are being conveyed through the hot pressing station, the conveying means being so arranged that the superimposed facing and backing pieces after passing from the hot pressing station are delivered on to a flat portion of the conveyer belt in the cooling station 13 and are there out of contact with the second pressing surface. The conveyer belt 14 is made of heat-resistant, flexible material and is preferably impermeable. The periphery of the cylinder is preferably of heat-reflective foraminous material having small holes 24 therein. When the surface of the cylinder forms the second pressing surface 17, a belt 27 or a plurality of filamentary elements 28 may be provided to prevent the textile pieces adhering to the cylinder. The heating unit 15 may comprise radiant heaters 26 which may be disposed within the cylinder and/or high frequency heaters. In an alternative embodiment, hot air or vapour may be used for heating, both pressing surfaces in this embodiment being permeable. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 6, heating can be interrupted in the event of a failure of the drive of pressing surfaces 16 and 17 by automatically operated diaphragm 37.
