Abstract
1342709 Driving arrangements for dynamo-electric machines S S S PATENTS Ltd 29 Sept 1971 [1 Oct 1970 5 Feb 1971] 46736/70 and 4059/71 Heading H2A [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] An electrical power generating plant utilizing storage of water or air comprises a motor/ generator 2 connected through clutches 4, 5 to a turbine 1 and to a pump or compressor 3, the plant operating in the same rotational direction in the generating or pumping modes. Clutch 4 engages automatically when turbine 1 tends to overrun motor/generator 2 in the normal direction of rotation and disengages automatically when the latter overruns the turbine. Clutch 5 is capable of overrunning when motor/generator 2 rotates relatively to pump or compressor 3 in the normal direction but, to assist rapid changeover between generating and pumping modes, includes means (see Division F2) causing the clutch to automatically engage when motor/generator 2 tends to rotate in the reverse direction relatively to pump or compressor 3. The relative reverse rotation can be effected by an electrical braking system which, after motor/generator 2 has been disconnected from the grid and come to rest, causes an immediate reversal of the motor/ generator relative to the stationary shaft of pump or compressor 3 thus locking the latter bidirectionally to the motor/generator. The reverse relative rotation may alternatively be effected, in the case of a hydraulic plant, by braking water causing reverse rotation of turbine 1. In this case clutch 4 is provided with locking means such that when turbine 1 is rotating at full speed it can be clutched bidirectionally to motor/generator 2. In another arrangement the reverse relative rotation is effected by rotation of pump 3 in the normal direction of rotation by admission of water to impinge on the pump impeller. Alternatively the latter may be rotated by a servo actuated ratchet type turning gear. When the plant is of the type in which the turbine is operated by the combustion of fuel with stored air then an auxiliary electric motor (60, Fig. 4, not shown) is connectable to the compressor via a self shifting clutch (61) for starting and changeover of operational modes. The changeover and starting sequences are described.
