Abstract

1342460 Oleum STAMICARBON NV 5 May 1972 [7 May 1971 3 Nov 1971] 21135/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division C2] Oleum is synthesized from an SO 2 -containing gas obtained by thermally decomposing an aqueous solution comprising ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid which solution is itself obtained as by-product in the preparation of a lactum. The SO 2 -containing gas (e.g. comprising SO 2 , H 2 O, O 2 , CO 2 and N 2 ) may be cooled directly or indirectly to reduce the H 2 O content such that the SO 2 /H 2 O molar ratio is greater than unity. Oleum containing >20% by weight of free SO 3 is specified.
