Abstract

1342371 Hinge for an adjustable chair FRITZ KETPER 6 Sent 1971 41495/71 Heading E2F In an adjustable-chair-backrest hinge having a first member 15 pivoted by a pin 16 to a second member 14, a locking plate 18 on the pin 16 has a recess 19 defining two abutments 20, 21 which are respeotively co-operable with a releasable latch 22 and a stop 24 each fixed to the member 15; and a releasable ratchet means 32 on the member 14 is co-operable with a ratchet 31 on the plate 18. Thus, the abutments 20, 21 define the relative angular position of the members 14, 15; release of the latch 22 allows the member 15 (and hence the chair-back) to be pivoted forward with the latch riding on a surface 29 of the plate 18; and release of the ratchet means 32 allows the plate 18 to be rotated to vary said angular position. The ratchet means 32 comprises a forked plate pivotal about 33 and is operated by a cruciform lever 35 having one arm 41 engageable either with the fork 43 to urge the ratchet means 32 into engagement with the locking plate 18, or with fork 45 to release the ratchet means. A torsion spring may be connected between the members 14, 15 or between the member 15 and the plate 18. The cruciform levers 35 of two such hinges on either side of a seat may be interconnected by a Bowden cable 49.
