Abstract

1342016 Boots &c BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO Ltd 27 April 1971 [30 April 1970] 11551/71 Heading A3B A lasting machine includes pulling over means, wiping means, a heel rest which moves into engagement with the heel end of the shoe from a retracted position, means for operating progressively around marginal portions of the upper guided by template means, and means for automatically selecting a portion of the template means appropriate to the size of the shoe, the selecting means being actuated by movement of the heel rest into engagement with the shoe. The means for operating progressively around the marginal portions of the upper may be (a) the trimming device described in specification No. 1277302 and/or (b) the progressive side lasting device described in Specification 1297122. In a first embodiment (Fig. 1) the template means consists of a pattern 15 having sloping sides, the outline at different levels corresponding to different sizes of shoes. The pattern 15 is moved heightwise relative to a follower 16 by a piston rod 14 connected to a piston 13 in cylinder 12. The cylinder 12 is connected by line 10 to the space 9 in front of the piston 5 which moves the heel rest 3 into contact with the shoe, the spaces 9, 11 and line 10 being filled with hydraulic fluid. Thus movement of the heel rest 3 into contact with the shoe 1 automatically moves the pattern 15 so that the follower 16 engages the pattern 15 at a level having a contour corresponding to the size of shoe 1. In a second embodiment (Figs. 2, 3) the operating means (represented at 39) is carried by one arm 35 of a parallelogram linkage 35, 36, 30, the second arm 30 of the linkage carrying a follower 28 which can engage a selected one of a stack of four cams, 40 to 43, depending on the heightwise position of the stack. The stack 40 to 43 is mounted on a block 47 which is pivoted to rocker arm 49 which rests on two plungers 50, 51. The plungers 50, 51 are housed in cylinders 52, 53 and have different strokes, actuation of the plungers being controlled by solenoid operated valves (not shown) operated by a control circuit including switches b 1 , b 2 , b 3 . These switches are operated in sequence by cams 23 to 26 on a control rod 22 carried by the heel rest 17 as the heel rest 17 moves into contact with the shoe 1. As the heel rest 17 moves towards the shoe the switches are actuated to control the plungers in the following sequence:-(a) both plungers 50, 51 are raised so that follower 28 engages cam 43 corresponding to the largest size of shoe, (b) plunger 51 is raised and plunger 50 is lowered so that the follower 28 engages cam 42, (c) plunger 50 is raised and plunger 51 is lowered (as shown in Fig. 3) so that follower 28 engages cam 41, and (d) both plungers 50, 51 are lowered so that follower 28 engages cam 40 corresponding to the smallest size of shoe.
