Abstract
1341828 Gain control J K HOURIE 31 Dec 1970 [31 Dec 1969] 63576/69 Heading H4R [Also in Divisions G4 and G5] Apparatus for converting sound into indications for appreciation by optical or tactile sensation or by electric current through the body, e.g. for assisting the hard of hearing or for use in teaching (see Division G5), includes an automatic gain control circuit in which an increase in the power dissipated by a transistor Q1 causes an increase in the attenuation which the circuit provides. Resistors R1, R2 provide the base current for a transistor Q2 used in an emitter follower circuit. R8 is the emitter load resistor. Because of a capacitor Cl the power dissipated by transistor Q1 is supplied only by the input signal. When the signal amplitude is low, Q1 is in a non-conducting state and the attenuation is negligible. The bias current for Q1 is derived from the output signal by means of diodes D3, D4 and capacitors C2, C3. An increase in amplitude of the output signal causes Q1 to dissipate more energy thereby increasing the attenuation due to the potentiometer comprising resistors R1, R2 and transistor Q1. The diodes D1 and D2 rectify the signal before presentation to the collector of Q1 so that energy is dissipated on both half cycles. Resistors R3 and R4 minimise the distortion of the signal waveform. The time constants of the A.G.C. action are determined by resistors R5, R6 and R7 and capacitor C2.
