Abstract

1341229 Electro-depositing iron foil ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 10 April 1972 [11 Feb 1971,13 April 1971] 4456/71 and 9236/71 Heading C7B Fe foil is made by electro-depositing Fe on a cathode from an electrolyte containing ferrous ions made to flow at a uniform rate, preferably at between 2 and 10 cm/sec, between the cathode and a non-consumable anode uniformly spaced from the cathode, with the cathode surface preferably of Ti continuously moving through the electrolyte at a uniform rate and the cathode being heated to maintain it at a uniform temperature, and stripping the deposited foil from the cathode. Preferably, the electrolyte is a FeCl 2 solution having a molarity between 2À4 and 3À5 and pH between 0À3 and 1À4; the cathode temperature is at between 92 and 110‹C, higher than that of the electrolyte at between 92 and 105‹C, and the anode temperature is at between 50 and 105‹C; and the cathodic current density is between 0À2 and 1À0 A/cm<SP>2</SP>. The cathode may be a rotating cylindrical Ti sleeve mounted on a plurality of coaxial discs and heated internally; the electrolyte head may be set at a predetermined level by an adjustable weir. Seals may engage the cathode surface to delimit the width of Fe foil deposited.
