Abstract

1340905 Subaqueous structures COMBINATIE WESTERSCHELDE VOF and CHRISTIANIA NIELSEN A/S 19 April 1971 [31 March 1970] 25651/71 Heading E1H A method of laying a foundation for a subaqueous structure, e.g. a tunnel section 4b, comprises mounting the section on temporary supports 33, 34 and supplying a suspension of sand and water to the space beneath the structure via a plurality of nozzles 11 whilst drawing off water from the space via nozzles 12, the nozzles 11, 12 being connected to conduits 10b, 13b respectively, fixed to the section 4b. The sections 4a-4e are laid end to end, and connections 21, 27 are provided between the conduits 10b, 13b of adjacent sections. Valves 22, 28 enable each conduit 10b, 13b to be isolated, and valves 19, 25 isolate the nozzles 11, 12 from their respective conduits. The sand suspension is supplied by a dredger vessel 8 drawing sand from a vessel 7 and water is drawn off by pump 14. The nozzle 11 is pivoted about a vertical axis to distribute the sand and a sight glass 29 in the conduit 13b enables an operator to observe when sand is drawn in via nozzle 12 indicating that the space below the section is filled with sand. The sand suspension is then directed to the next nozzle 11, each nozzle 11, 12 which has completed its function being filled with water tight mortar via pipes 31 before being cut off below their associated valves 19 and 25, and removed.
