Abstract

1340695 Powder clutches; inertia weight vibration dampers POWDER COUPLINGS Ltd 27 May 1971 [13 June 1970] 28729/70 Headings F2C and F2S In a powder clutch or vibration damper wherein torque is transmitted between a rotor 17 and a casing 21 through a centrifugally formed ring of cast iron shot or similar powder in a space 20 within the casing 21, an annular chamber 23 surrounds the space 20 and is connected thereto by a restricted passage 24 through which broken particles of shot may pass whilst the larger particles are retained in the space 20. The removal of the broken particles extends the life of the clutch or damper. The rotor 17 may have radial corrugations or may contain one or more circular arrays of equiangularly spaced holes. The shot may have diameters in the range 0À022 to 0À032 inches. The charge of shot may contain a suitable lubricant. For a vibration damper the casing 21 may form an inertia element whilst the rotor 17 is connected to an engine crankshaft 14. For a clutch the casing 21 is connected to a driving or driven shaft whilst the rotor 17 is connected to a driven or driving shaft.
