Abstract
1340473 Pipe couplings BETABITE HYDRAULICS Ltd 5 Sept 1972 41017/72 Heading F2G In a pipe coupling of the type in which a ferrule 1 is forced by a nut 13 against the conical bore 16 of a socket 15 so as to deform it to bite into the pipe 12, the ferrule has a uniform bore from its trailing end to a shoulder 4, a tapered leading portion 8 which is of smaller length than the distance between the cutting edge 6 and the shoulder 4, and wherein the cutting edge has an included angle greater than 90 degrees and is of a diameter just greater than that of the ferrule bore. As shown, the ferrule, which is initially cylindrical, barrels under the axial force to bring the shoulder 4 into contact with the pipe thus inidicating by the consequent increase in tightening force needed that the ferrule has embedded in the pipe wall sufficiently. The ferrule is made from a length of tube which is externally machined, counterbored and rollswaged to form the leading taper. The latter operation works the metal to increase the cutting edge angle beyond 90 degrees to lie preferably between 92 and 96 degrees. The cone angle of the ferrule and the conical bore 16 is 24 degrees.
