1340451 Shoulder joints TSENTRALNY ORDENA TRUDOVOGO KRASNOGO ZNAMENI NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT TRAVMATOLOGII I ORTOPEDII IMENI NN PRIOROVA MINISTERSTVA ZDRAVOOKHRANENIYA SSSR 20 July 1972 [12 Jan 1972] 1402/72 Heading A5R An implantable artificial shoulder joint comprises a ball-and-socket wherein the ball 6 carries a pin 1 for insertion into the medullary canal of the humerus and the socket 8 is formed in a shaped crown 7 for attachment to the articular process of the scapula. The pin 1 may have a slot 2 for bone tissue to grow into and a hole 3 to accommodate a securing screw. The crown 7 has its lateral walls 9 split into portions which are deformed during surgery to tightly embrace the articular process of the scapula. Each portion may carry a tongue (15), Fig. 3 (not shown) to assist in gripping the scapula, and the portions may be perforated by holes 10 into which bone tissue may intrude. Screw holes (14), Fig. 2 (not shown) receive screws to fix the crown to the scapula and a flute (12) in the top of the crown accommodates the tendon of the long head of the brachial biceps muscle. Holes 5, (13) may be provided on the joint so that muscles can be ligatured thereto.
