Abstract

1339894 Seaming non-metallic sheet material MINTRAY Ltd and P BROWN 7 Jan 1971 [13 Jan 1970] 1641/70 Heading B5K Garments or garment parts are manufactured by forming a tuck 16 in at least one web 10 within an area from which the garment (part) 5 is to be formed, securing the tuck at at least one location within the area to hold the tuck in place, severing the web 10 around the outline of the garment (part) 5 and opening the tuck away from the location where it is secured thereby forming a dart or pleat in the garment (part) 5. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, a fore part 5 of a dress is formed from a web 10 of paper or woven, non-woven or knitted fabric. At one station, adhesive is printed along lines 11 and a V-neck 12 is cut in the web 10 and, simultaneously, converging adhesive lines 13 are printed and convex lines 15 are cut to delineate sleeves 6. At another station, a plough device double folds the web to form a tuck 16 through the bust of the garment. At a third station, a second web 17 is adhered by pressure to the web 10 and the tuck 16 is secured in place at the seamlines. The composite web is cut along outlines 18, 19 to form a dress and two sleeves. The upper end of the sleeve is adhered to the sleeve aperture of the dress by adhesive in a separate operation. In a modification (not shown), the tuck 16 is formed in the web 10 prior to printing the adhesive lines 11, 13. In another modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), identical sleeve halves (8) are formed in each web (10), (17). In another embodiment, Fig. 3, the fore part of a blouse or shirt is formed from two side-byside webs 30, 31 having overlapping edges folded to provide a double thickness 32. At a first station, adhesive is applied along seamlines 35 and, simultaneously, a semi-circular neck opening 33 and button holes 34 are cut. At a second station, longitudinal tucks 36 extending through the shoulder seam lines are formed. At a third station, a third web 37 is adhered to the webs 30, 31 and cut around outline 38 to form a shirt body to which sleeves, cuffs, neckbands and/or collars may be attached by pressure sensitive adhesive. In modifications (not shown), tucks 36 may be formed in the web 37 instead of or as well as the tucks in the webs 30, 31, the fore part may be formed in a single web with a short downwardly extending cut to enable the neck opening to be widened to facilitate putting-on or taking-off the shirt, or adhesive may be applied to the web(s) at the location of the waist prior to forming the tucks so that they are held in place at the waist. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4, a bra or bikini top is formed from a single web 40 which is printed with adhesive along two lines 41 towards the end of the intended part and two lines 42 in the middle of the part. Two tucks 43 are formed so that web parts on each side of the lines 41, 42 are adhered thereto. The folded web is severed around the outline 44 and the folded parts between each adjacent pair of lines 41, 42 are unfolded to form cups 45. Holding straps (not shown), are adhered separately. Alternatively, the lines 41, 42 may be curved or "chevron" shaped. A box pleat may be formed in a garment by forming two oppositely facing tucks therein.
