Abstract

1339565 Electrostatic field coating apparatus BRITISH STEEL CORP 30 Sept 1971 [13 Oct 1970] 48583/70 Heading D1L In a process for improving the adhesion of paint to a metallic surface with a liquid reactive with the metal, the liquid is applied to the surface through an electrostatic field in the form of atomised liquid particles. The liquid is directed through an aperture in a container, the operative containing an electrode, between which and the metallic surface an electric discharge of high intensity is maintained. The liquid is preferably directed by subjecting the liquid in the container to a gas pressure. The liquid is preferably an aqueous solution e.g. a phosphating or chromating solution and contains a liquid freezing point depressant e.g. diethylene glycol. The metal may be aluminium, copper, tin plate, an aluminium zinc alloy, or a substrate coated with a metallic oxide such as alumina or silica. Preferably the metallic surface is iron coated with zinc. In the preferred embodiment, as a continuous process in a vacuum chamber, the liquid treatment is combined with the deposition of a molten metal onto the metallic surface, and the subsequent painting of the treated surface. As shown, a mild steel strip having opposite sides 3 and 4, enters vacuum chamber 1, through seal 5 and exits via seal 6. At 14 and 15, molten zinc is condensed on surfaces 4 and 3 respectively. At 16 and 24, the treating liquids are applied respectively to the zinc coated surfaces 4 and 3. In each case the liquid is projected from reservoir 23, under atmospheric pressure, via tubular portion 20, and aperture 21 onto the coated surface. From aperture 21, projects axially extending electrode 22. The strip is painted at 25, and the coating cured at 26, by an electron beam.
