Abstract

1339152 Castors; brakes for castors HOMA ENG Ltd 11 Aug 1972 [18 Aug 1971] 38702/71 Heading A4V [Also in Division F2] A castor fork 1 is locked against swivelling by the engagement of the ends 16a of a pin, which passes through a spindle 10, in slots 17a in a locking sleeve 17 when the spindle is lowered to an intermediate position by downward pressure on a nut 11 to overcome the action of a spring 12, a brake pad 15 on the lower end of the spindle being brought into braking contact with the wheel periphery when the spindle is lowered farther. The sleeve 17 is mounted between a hollow central stem 9, rigidly secured to the fork, and a hollow vertical peg 6 rigidly fitted in a tubular furniture leg, the sleeve being restrained from rotation by a pin 18 but coaxially slidable so that in the case of non-alignment of the ends 16a with the slots 17a on lowering of the spindle to its intermediate, swivel-lock position, the sleeve moves downwards against the action of a spring 20 until subsequent angular movement of the fork allows engagement of the ends 16a in the slots 17a and the sleeve moves upwards to effect the swivel lock.
