Abstract

1338472 Air-cushion vehicles CURTIS DYNA-PRODUCTS CORP 31 Dec 1971 [12 Jan 1971] 1439/71 Heading B7K [Also in Division F2] An ACV comprises a central air duct 2 down which air is driven to form a cushion, a flexible peripheral skirt 3 in the form of a substantially closed loop in transverse cross-section, a substantially closed peripheral plenum chamber 5 above the skirt, a duct 7 to direct a portion of the air stream in the duct 2 into the plenum chamber, a duct to connect the plenum chamber 5 to the skirt 3, and means whereby the pressure of the air within the skirt is adjustable and can be controlled to a desired pressure within a range above and below the cushion pressure. The skirt is divided into four sections (30, 31, 32, 33), Fig. 8 (not shown), each section having individual pressure controlling means. Pressure control of the skirt is achieved by means of a centrifugal pump 14 and non-return valve 8 in the inlet duct 7, and a valve 15 and suction pump 21 in the outlet duct 22. Tight turns may be effected by deflating selected sections of the skirt to bank the ACV. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 10 (not shown), the fan (53) is disposed near the front of the vehicle and the air-cushion supply duct is inclined rearwardly and downwardly thus assisting in propulsion of the vehicle. When the skirt 3 is completely deflated the vehicle is supported on wheels 24, 25 and 26.
