Abstract

1338178 Constant tension device INSTITUT FRANCAISE DU PETROLE DES CARBURANTS ET LUBRIFIANTS 10 Dec 1971 4981/71 Divided out of 1338177 Addition to 1338177 Heading B8B A device for maintaining a constant tension in a line 3 extending between a fixed point in the form of a braked winch 4 on a floating installation N subject to wave motion and a fixed point 2 on the sea bed, comprises two sets of return pulleys 5-7 on the installation and around which the line 3 is looped, the pulley set 7 being displaceable relative to the fixed pulley set 5 to take up slack or yield to increase tension in the line 3. The movable pulley at 7 is mounted on a lever 8 pivoted to the installation at 9 and the lever 8 is biased by an hydraulic ram 10 in a line tensioning direction, the direction of the ram centerline, for each position of the movable pulley 7, being different from the direction of the travel path of the pulley 7 for that position. The ram 10 which is operated by an hydro-pneumatic accumulator 13, is pivoted at 11 to the installation N. Electrical limit switches are operated upon excessive travel of the lever 8, whereupon the winch 4 is operated to wind in or pay out line 3 until the line tension is back in the range of the compensating arrangement.
