1337749 Feed supplement COMMONWEALTH SCIENTIFIC & INDUSTRIAL RESEARCH ORGANIZATION 18 Dec 1970 [19 Dec 1969] 60299/70 Heading A2B A feed supplement for ruminant animals comprises lipid material finely divided into descrete particles or globules said particles or globules comprising a layer of reaction product of an animal or plant protein and an aldehyde surrounding the lipid material thereby defining the discrete particles or globules, the reaction product being resistant to breakdown in the rumen but susceptible to breakdown in the abomasum. The reaction product is soluble at pH levels greater than 5 and substantially soluble at pH levels less than 4. The lipid material and protein may be derived from different sources or the same source, i.e. an oil seed. Suitable aldehydes are formaldehyde, glutaraldehyde and glyoxal. The suppliement may be prepared by emulsifying the lipid and protein, forming a product in particulate form from the emulsification step and reacting with an aldehyde, the latter reaction preferably occuring by passing the particles of product from the emulsification step down a column containing an atmosphere comprising the aldehyde. The lipid material may comprise at least one vegetable oil derived from soya beans, peanuts, sunflowers, safflowers, cotton seeds, maize and rape, or at least one animal oil derived from fish, fowls of pigs. The protein may be casein, gelatin or gluten.
