Abstract

1336995 Fluid operated actuators; hydraulic accumulators A JOHNSTON 28 July 1971 [ 5 May 1970] 21577/70 Headings F1D and F1P [Also in Division F2] A cellular elastomeric body (Div. F2) is used between relatively reciprocable members and acts as both a seal and a return spring, the body being impervious to fluid. A remote control hydraulic actuator system, Fig. 6, includes cellular bodies 77, 78 in the master and slave units 68, 70. As applied to a hydraulic accumulator, Fig. 7, one end of the cellular body 84 is attached to the end of the cylinder while the other end is attached to the piston to form a stretchable bag sealing the air space 83 from the oil space 82. In Figs. 8A and 8B (not shown), a hydraulic ram comprises three telescopic tubes; cellular bodies (93, 94) between the tubes serve to seal the joints and tend to collapse the ram from its extended position. In a pneumatic actuator, Figs. 9A and 9B (not shown), a cellular body (99) provided between the piston (96) and the end of the cylinder through which the piston rod passes is of a hollow truncated conical shape such that the area of contact of the body with the piston increases as the body is compressed by the piston; alternatively, the cellular body may be dome-shaped or stepped to afford different compressibility characteristics and the bore which surrounds the piston rod may be conical or cylindrical so that it engages the piston rod along part or all of its length. A pneumatic ram may consist of three telescopic tubes 115, 116, 117, Fig. 11, or two tubes, Figs. 10A and 10B (not shown), extended by air pressure and contracted by the cellular seal body 118 which is bonded at 119 and 120 and possibly bonded at 121.
