Abstract

1336821 Corona discharge device RCA CORP 22 March 1972 [2 April 1971] 14736/72 Heading G2H A corona discharge device comprises an elongated corona electrode 32 disposed within a housing such that the corona discharge is directed towards a foraminous screen 26. A catalyst such as silver gold, nickel, platinum, iron, an alloy of these metals, nickel sesquioxide, barium monoxide, cupric oxide and silver peroxide is provided within the housing, e.g. as layers 54, for converting into oxygen any ozone produced during discharge. A second foraminous screen 30 may be provided and both screens may be coated with or comprise at least one of the catalytic materials. A baffle plate 28 prevents Ultraviolet light from reaching the photo-conductive surface 14 of the recording element 16. The screens 26 and 30 preferably have an optical transmission of less than 50%. In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, the electrode 72 is held on rods 76 between two foraminous screens 62 and 70 having an optical transmission of between 20% and 50%, the screens being either made of or coated with the catalytic material. Certain catalytic materials e.g. barium monoxide and silver peroxide may be held in foraminous screen containers 84. A fan 86 is arranged to draw any ozone through the catalytic material 82.
