Abstract

1336785 Lap-forming apparatus; non woven fabrics UNION CARBIDE CORP 1 July 1971 [2 July 1970] 30782/71 Headings D1N and D1R Apparatus for air laying a fibrous mat comprises a planar foraminous collecting surface 12, a suction plenum 14, a stationary horizontal duct 62 disposed across the width of surface 12, the duct having a longitudinally extending slot 64 facing surface 12, on a delivery means surrounding and connected to the duct 62, comprising arcuately spaced rotating vanes 66. The rotation of the vanes causes the fibre suspension to scan the collecting surface 12 and thus deposit a layer of fibres. As shown the collecting surface is an endless belt 12. In one embodiment slot 64 is wider at its upstream end than at its downstream end. The width of slot 64 may be adjustably tapered by a flexible shutter blade (63, Fig. 3, not shown) in order that the delivery of fibres is uniform across the width of the belt. To reach the belt the suspension of fibres passes between the curved vanes 66, which rotate about the axis of duct 62. The curvature of the vanes deflects the suspension in the opposite direction to the deflection caused by the rotation. The deflections may cancel, so that the suspension moves vertically downwards. Alternatively each pair of vanes causes a separate stream of fibres to sweep along the belt. In one embodiment designed to ensure uniform flow velocities the slot is of uniform width but the depth of the channel decreases smoothly to zero as the downstream end is approached. The channel may optionally contain curved louvres 108 pivotable about the opposite sides of the channel, the degree of pivot being controlled by individual rods 114. The fibres may be wood, cotton, regenerated cellulose, asbestos, glass or synthetic polymer. Long staple fibres are separated by the fluffing action of cords, garnetts and opening pickers, whilst sheets of wood fibres are separated by disk grinders and hammer mills. The web may subsequently be treated with binder, printed and/or cut.
