1336700 Mixing fibres; cleaning machines SCHUBERT & SALZER MASCHINENFABRIK AG 19 June 1972 [19 June 1971] 28607/72 Heading D1F In the operation of a pick-up apparatus employed in the automatic mixing of fibres, a carriage 1 travels on rails 2 along a row of bales such as B of different fibre material and at each bale position a gripper arm 4 is lowered on a guide bar 3 so that pairs of grippers grasp fibre material from the bale whereupon the gripper arm is raised and then pivoted to a position over a collecting container 5 into which it releases the fibre. A catching or collection plate 6 intercepts fibre escaping from the grippers to prevent it fouling the rails and divert it into the container or restore it to the bale. As shown, plate 6 is pivotable between catching and drapping positions the movement being pneumatically, electrically or mechanically controlled as a function of the displacement of the grippers so that collision between plate and grippers is avoided. As described, a pneumatic control system, Fig. 3 (not shown) comprises two cylinders the coacting pistons of which respectively operate the plate and grippers in response to a single control valve directing compressed air thereto. The travelling pick-up apparatus represented by Fig. 4 comprises milling rolls 7 which remove fibres from the underside of the bales to be directed for collection into a container 50 equipped with catching plates 64, 65.
