Abstract

Apparatus for feeding fibres to carding machines has a vertical passageway with two of its walls 8, 9 mounted to swing, the swinging movement of one wall 9 being arranged to stop feed of the fibres into the passageway when the passageway contains a satisfactory quantity of fibres. The wall 8 may be formed of vertical, parallel spaced bars fixed at their lower ends to a shaft 16 and wall 9 is composed of parallel tines connected at their upper ends to a shaft 22 and held in their normal position by a weighted lever 23. By means of eccentric discs 19 the wall 8 is oscillated and when the quantity of fibres in the passageway exceeds a predetermined amount the oscillations cause wall 9 to swing sufficiently to tilt a switch 27 thereby stopping a feed roller 28. Feed roller 28 is covered by a wire screen and serves to convey fibres from a raw material storage compartment 7 assisted by a stripper comb 31 and doffer 32.
