1336694 Attaching webs to cores KING INSTRUMENT CORP 24 Jan 1972 [I March 1971] 3247/72 Heading B8R Apparatus for attaching ends of magnetic tapes to spool cores comprises a tape supply roll 14, Fig. 1, from which a predetermined length of tape 16, advanced past guide rollers 18 and a stationary guide pin 20 and under a block 26, is bound on to a staked hub 132A under control of a timer or reader (not shown) sensing a stop mark, whereupon the tape feed is stopped and a pair of hubs 132B, 132C mounted on a hub block 24 is advanced upwardly by a piston cylinder assembly 142 into an underlying relationship with the tape 16. When the assembly 142 is stopped a further cyclinder 180, Fig. 4, is actuated to cause its piston 186 to pivot a crank 190 associated with a unidirectionally driven knurled roller pair 173 to angularly displace the rollers co-operating with a pair of rollers 169, having respective grooves 170 in which are located plastics rods 54, to advance the rods a distance corresponding to the length of the hubs 132B, 132C and provide end sections 54A, Fig. 9, which when respective pistons 104, 106, Fig. 1, are actuated are severed by cutting edges 94, Fig. 2, integral with their cutters 28, 30 which are displaced downwardly by the pistons 104, 106. Continued downward movement of the cutting edges causes the severed end sections 54A to be forced into axially extending key slots 138, Figs. 4, 9, for staking the tape 16 in the slots, the tape section between the hubs 132B, 132C being severed adjacent the slots by the cutting edges 94 after a further downward movement. The hub supporting block 24 is thereafter lowered by the assembly 146 and the hubs 132A, 132B removed for loading into a cartridge, and the hub 132C placed on the spindle 66 replacing the hub 132A, a further pair of hubs 132 being mounted on the hub supporting block for repetition of the staking process.
