Abstract

1336553 Measuring tape NEWEY GOODMAN Ltd 19 April 1971 [19 Feb 1970] 7993/70 Heading G1M A tape measure comprises a return spring 13 and a releasable braking mechanism for preventing return of the tape into the housing by the spring. The tape winds around a drum 16 which has a slot 15 engaged by a shoulder 14 on one end of spring 13, the other end of the spring having a slot (not shown) engaging a dove-tail 12 on the housing. Ratchet teeth 25 are formed on part 18 of the drum and are engaged by detents 28 formed on an arcuate plastics blade spring 26 to prevent rewinding of the tape by spring 13. The braking mechanism is released by pressing button 27 integral with the spring, the button being hexagonal in cross-section and passing through a hexagonal bore in bearing member 11 to prevent rotation of the spring. The spring 26 may be a domed disc with radial slits, and the push button may be formed separate from the spring. The teeth 25 may be of a non-ratchet shape so that push button 27 has to be pressed to unwind the tape from the casing. A single detent 28 may provided on spring 26. The tape may be of textile fabric, steel or plastics material and is secured to the drum 16 by having a loop passing through slot 15 with a pin 22 Fig. 2 (not shown) passing through the loop in a hole 23 in the drum. The brake mechanism may be frictional.
