1,071,895. Coilable tapes. ETABLISSEMENTS QUENOT & CIE., S.a.r.L. May 17, 1965 [March 13, 1965], No.20680/65. Heading G1M. A tape measuring device comprises a housing 1, 2, a shank 3a, 3b, a spring 6 attached by its inner end to and coiled around the shank, a tape 9 whose inner end is attached to the outer end of the spring and which is coiled to the outside of the spring, the outer end of the tape passing through a slot in the housing so that a desired length of tape can be withdrawn by partially uncoiling the spring and can be released so that the tape recoils under the force of the tensioned spring, a tape braking member 8 rotatable about the shank by frictional contact with the tape during recoiling and having at least one recess for receiving a braking element 15, 17, the arrangement being such that when the braking member attains a predetermined speed the braking element is urged into frictional contact with the inner wall of the housing and thereby reduces the rate at which the tape is recoiling. When the disc 8 turns by friction with the tape 9 the elements 15-18 are pressed by centrifugal force against the interior wall of the housing which brakes the disc 8. In a second embodiment Figs. 3, 4 (not shown) the discs 7, 8 are replaced by cylinder 19 with an end part 20. The spring is coiled inside the cylinder and the tape on the outside, the tape and spring being attached at an opening 22.
