Abstract

1336300 U V absorbers in light-sensitive silver halide material KONISHIROKU PHOTO INDUSTRY CO Ltd 29 Dec 1970 [29 Dec 1969] 61637/70 Heading G2C A light-sensitive silver halide photographic element comprises a support carrying a layer comprising a hydrophilic binder and a solution in an organic liquid comprising a difficultly watermiscible liquid of boiling point at least 175‹C. or a mixture of such a liquid with a liquid of boiling point below 160‹C. of at least one ultraviolet absorber of the formula (I):- wherein each of R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 is H, halogen, alkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxy, aryl, carbalkoxy or an alkylsulphonic group, and at least one compound of the formula (II):- wherein each of R 6 and R 7 is H, alkyl, alkoxy, arylsubstituted alkoxy or an acyl group, X is -CO- or -COO- and n is 1, 2, 3 or 4. The said layer may be a light-sensitive silver halide layer (EX2), an interlayer (EX3) or an outer protective layer (EX1). The ratio of compound (II) to compound (I) is preferably 0À1:1 to 2:1 by weight. The total number of carbons in R 1 , R 2 and R 3 is preferably 0-8. Preferred compounds of the formula (I) are 2-(2' -hydroxy-5' -methylphenyl) benzotriazole, 2-(2' -hydroxy-5' -methylphenyl)5- butyloxycarbonylbenzotriazole, 2-(2' -hydroxy- 5' -tert-butylphenyl)-5-chlorobenzotriazole, 2-(2'-hydroxy-5' -amylphenyl) benzotriazole and 2-(2'-hydroxy-5' -tert-butylphenyl) benzotriazole. The compound of formula (II) imparts the desired solubility to the ultraviolet absorber with the result that R 1 , R 2 and R 3 do not need to have such a large number of carbon atoms as the longchain oleophilic groups in known ultraviolet absorbers.
