Abstract

1335991 Anion exchange resins ROHM & HAAS CO 7 Dec 1970 [11 Dec 1969] 58011/70 Heading C3P [Also in Division C1] Strongly basic anion exchange resins comprise cross linked polymers comprising more than 50% by weight of mers of one or more monovinyl aromatic monomers, the aromatic nuclei in the mers containing substituent quaternary ammonium anion exchange groups, the polymer being cross-linked at least in part by units derived from at least one aliphatic polyfunctional methacrylate having at least three methacrylate groups. The quaternary ammonium groups are preferably introduced into the copolymer by aminating with a tertiary amine, a cross-linked copolymer as described above, but in which the aromatic nuclei contain haloalkyl groups, so that the ultimate ion-exchange polymer contains the groups of the formula in which n is 1-4, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are monovalent hydrocarbon groups and Y is an anion, such as Cl-, SO= 4 or OH-. Aromatic monomers mentioned are styrene and vinyl naphthalene, and substituted styrenes. Methacrylate cross-linking monomers mentioned are trimethylol propane trimethacrylate, pentaerythritol trimethacrylate and glycerol trimethacrylate. In examples, styrene and trimethylol propane trimethacrylate are suspension polymerized to give a bead product, which is then chloromethylated with chloromethyl ether and AlCl 3 catalyst, and then aminated with trimethylamine and converted to its hydroxyl or chloride form.
