Abstract

1335526 Fluid film bearing CENTRE D'- ETUDES ET DE RECHERCHES DE LA MACHINE-OUTIL 8 March 1972 [29 March 1971] 10693/72 Heading F2A A fluid bearing assembly for supporting a body 1 on a film 3 of pressurized fluid has a member with a bearing surface and a cavity 9 therein, the cavity having a surface inclined to the perpendicular to the bearing surface there being means for supplying fluid to a part of the cavity remote from the surface, and a restrictor element 10 located in the cavity being movable in the direction perpendicular to the bearing surface, the element having a surface 11 conforming to that of the cavity. The element is movably connected to the bearing member either by a screw (17) with shims (15, Fig. 1, not shown) located between the member and element, or by a flexible diaphragm 20. The diaphragm is arranged to counteract the variation in the pressure of the film. A fluid chamber 22 may be provided on one side of the diaphragm to which fluid may be fed for adjusting the position of the element. The fluid may be supplied to the chamber via a restrictor from the main fluid supply or from the fluid film. The body may be provided with two opposed bearing surfaces in each of which is a cavity with a common restrictor element.
