Abstract
1335487 Recycling I.C. engine exhaust gases CHRYSLER CORP 22 Nov 1971 54184/71 Heading F1B [Also in Division F2] A hot spot provided by a wall portion 20 between the induction and exhaust systems has an exhaust recycling duct therethrough with a restriction 23 adjacent its upstream end. The restriction 23 is spaced from the hot spot, e.g. by the wall thickness of the nozzle 22 at the restriction, sufficiently for the temperature at the restriction to be above the precipitation temperature of lead in the exhaust gases. An opening 30 in the throttle valve 14 may provide a flow of air during idling which opposes the exhaust gas flow through the nozzle 22. The nozzle (22a), Fig.2 (not shown) may extend only slightly to either side of the wall portion 20. The restriction 23 may be obturated by a valve member 32a, Fig.3, operated in response to the position of the valve 14. The diaphragm 35 of the valve actuator is subject to the pressure at the distributer vacuum advance port 43 and biased by a spring 40 so that the member 32a closes or restricts the restriction 23 only when the valve 14 is adjacent its idling and full throttle positions. The diaphragm 35 may be subjected on opposite sides to the pressures at the port 43 and in the intake manifold 12 and biased to open the restriction 23 by a spring (40a), Fig.4 (not shown). A nozzle 22, e.g. of stainless steel, may be provided in the wall portion 20 for each barrel of a multi-barrel carburetter 10. The intake manifold 12 includes passages 12a, 12b leading to respective banks of engine cylinders and the exhaust passage 19 provides communication between the exhaust manifolds 17, Fig.3, of the banks. A thermostatically controlled valve (21), Fig.4, in one exhaust manifold 17 controls the exhaust gas flow through the passage 19.
