Abstract
1335217 Tufting machines EDGAR PICKERING (BLACKBURN) Ltd 3 Jan 1972 [5 Oct 1970 13 May 1971] 47279/70 and 14698/71 Heading DIG In a tufting machine the main shaft is placed low to minimise vibration of the machine, and drives the needle rocker shaft 12 (Fig. 3) the hook rocker shaft 19 and the knife rocker shaft 28 through eccentrics and connecting rods connected to adjustable slides on drive arms 39, 339 and 439. The drive arm 39 (Fig. 5) has a scale 39B to register directly the needle stroke, and a scale 53 to register the timing. Both the needle stroke and the timing may be adjusted by slackening the drive arm on its shaft and then rotating the screws 47 and 54 respectively. This is done with the needles at their lowermost point, and only the height to which they are raised is altered. To compensate, the fabric height is adjusted by adjusting the height of the bed plate (33, Fig. 2 not shown). The needle rocker bar drives the needle bar 51 (Fig. 4B) through oscillating links 13, 15 adjustably clamped to push rods 17. The hook shaft and knife shaft are formed in three sections joined by collars 63. The centre section carries the hooks or knives and may be replaced by a section carrying other hooks or knives. Lateral shift of either the needle bar or the fabric may be provided. A cam 71 (Fig. 4B) in the form of a ridge round a drum 69 moves cam followers 72 which are fixed to a shaft 74. In the embodiment this shaft is connected to a pin roll (75, Fig. 11, not shown) over which the fabric passes, to reciprocate the fabric laterally. In a modification (Fig. 12) eccentrics 121 on the drive shaft 10 are held in slides 122 which move in frames 123 pivoted on pins 123A. The stroke of the connecting rod 128, may be adjusted by rotating a knob 125 to alter the distance between the main shaft and the pin 128A. In addition the top link 133 may be fixed in any combination of the holes A and B to the links 132, 132A to give a series of ranges of needle stroke, within which the knob 125 acts as a fine adjuster. The timing may also be adjusted by slackening screws 142 and rotating the link 132A slightly on the shaft 130. It is stated that minor adjustments are facilitated and are repeatable without going inside the machine.
