Abstract

1335132 Preparing crosslinkable copolymers VIANOVA KUNSTHARZ AG 16 June 1971 [22 July 1970] 28304/71 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C7] Cross-linkable copolymers that are watersoluble when neutralized are prepared by esterifying (a) 5-40% by weight of a partially or wholly etherified condensation product of a phenol and formaldehyde with (b) 5-30% by weight of an α,#-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or a functional derivative thereof having at least one free carboxy group, while simultaneously copolymerizing (b) with (c) from 30-90% by weight of a further ethylenically unsaturated monomer that has no free carboxy groups. Reaction is suitably effected in an organic solvent that is at least partially soluble in water at 20‹ C. using, for example, dicumyl peroxide initiator and t-dodecyl mercaptan regulator. The phenol of component (a) is preferably a p-alkyl, p-aryl, p-aralkyl or p-halo phenol, a bis-phenol such as 2,2-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)propane or 4,4-bis-(4-hydroxyphenyl)- pentanoic acid, or 2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-(carbethoxyphenyl)propane; etherification of the condensate is preferably effected with butanol. Component (b) may be acrylic, methacrylic, crotonic, maleic, fumaric, itaconic, citraconic, mesaconic or aconitic acid, or a partial ester or amide of such polycarboxylic acids. Comonomers (c) include alkyl or hydroxyalkyl acrylates and methacrylates, dialkyl maleates and fumarates, styrene and its alkyl-substituted derivatives, (meth)acrylonitrile and (meth)- acrylamide. The copolymers are rendered water-soluble by treating with bases such as ammonia or diisopropanolamine. Solutions of the products can be coated by electrodeposition or by dipping, spraying, brushing, rolling or flow-coating, e.g. on zinc-phosphated steel plate. The solutions may be combined with pigment, e.g. titanium dioxide, or with a glycidyl ester of synthetic fatty acids mainly containing a tertiary carbon atom attached to the carboxy group.
