Abstract
1335094 Rotary drum filters VOGELBUSCH GmbH 19 April 1971 [13 Feb 1970 13 Jan 1971] 21515/71 Heading BID In the operation of a rotating filter drum 1, the interior of which is not subdivided, the transfer of suspension-to-be-filtered to the drum from trough 7 is interrupted, during one or more revolutions of the drum, by the automatic lowering of the trough by the action of pneumatic cylinder 9. The suspension is supplied to trough 7 via conduit 30. The perforated drum is covered with filter cloth 2, e.g. of stainless steel, and this has a coating of filter aid 3, e.g. powdered starch. The thickness of the layer 5 of suspension on filter cake 4 is controlled by blade 25. The filtrate, sucked into the drum, is withdrawn therefrom through suction conduit 6. The trough 7 is lowered after the filter cake has reached a predetermined thickness. After trough 7 has been lowered, blade 22 is actuated by pneumatic cylinder 24 so as to wipe excess suspension from the filter cake. After the cake has been sucked dry, washing liquid (e.g. water) is sprayed onto it from nozzles 27; the cake is then sucked dry again. The cake is now removed from the drum by knife 10 which is actuated by pneumatic cylinder 12. Knife 10 is then moved a minute amount, by rotation of latch wheel 16 actuated by pneumatic cylinder 18, so that a thin layer of filter aid 3 is removed from the drum. The trough 7 is then raised, and the cycle of stages is repeated. The time intervals of the various stages may be controlled according to the nature of the suspension being filtered. Hydraulic cylinders may be used instead of pneumatic cylinders. The knife 10 is automatically sharpened by a scraper 43 (Figs. 8, 9, 10, not shown). The filtration of brewery and wine-fermentation sediments is referred to; also the filtration of autolysed cream of yeast.
