Abstract
802,255. Filters. MULLER, H. K. June 7, 1956 [June 11, 1955 ; Sept. 29, 1955 ; Oct. 28, 1955], No. 17665/56. Class 46. A shaft 4 carrying, on a perforate hollow extension, filter elements 7, is stationary or only slowly rotated by a motor 10 during filtration, but at the conclusion of filtration, when supply of liquid to be filtered has been cut off, rotation is rapid to remove residues from the elements by centrifugal force, the residues being simultaneously or subsequently removed from the container 1 through an aperture 14. The shaft may be automatically switched to high-speed running when the filtrate flow falls below a predetermined amount. The aperture 14 may be opened automatically upon increase in rotational speed. Discharge of the cake may be assisted by a liquid or gas under pressure, by a conveyer worm, or by co-rotating scraper plates travelling along the container inner wall. Stationary or rotating nozzles pointing in a downward direction between the filter elements and the container wall may be provided under the lid 18 for the gas or liquid. Residues may be prevented from coming into contact with the container wall by liquid turned on before the elements are rapidly rotated. The residues may be washed, and then dried by heating elements in the container, by radiation, induction or vacuum, or by hot gases introduced at 15 and withdrawn at 16. The dried residues may be discharged by compressed air. The elements are permeable at their upper faces only. In processes connected, e.g., with sugar, beverages and penicillin, where it is the filtrate which is valuable, filter aid (e.g., kieselguhr, wood meal, asbestos fibres) is applied from a slurry, and during centrifuging after filtration the residues are back-washed with water. The residues may be rinsed with hot water before removal so that the effluent from the container is sterilized. The direction of shaft rotation can be varied during centrifuging. When filter cloths are used they may be cleaned in situ by oscillating the shaft to produce a washing- machine action ; the direction of flow of the washing liquid may also be varied. Rotating beater pins may be provided in the lower part of the container to crush the centrifuged residues ; other, fixed, pins may be provided to cooperate with them. A valve may be built into the rotatable shaft and may be operable from outside the container so that, on the valve being closed one or more filtering elements are cut off from the lowest part of the shaft.
