Abstract

1335089 Colouring float glass ASAHI GLASS CO Ltd 1 Dec 1971 [14 Dec 1970] 55775/71 Heading C1M Coloured float glass is produced by advancing a ribbon of glass along a bath of molten metal, bringing a pool of molten metal comprising copper and lead into contact with the upper surface of the glass ribbon, maintaining the pool under a copper anode and applying a D.G. voltage of 15 to 30 volts between the anode and the molten metal bath across the glass. A reducing atmosphere is provided in the space above the bath, preferably consisting of nitrogen and 5-20% by volume hydrogen. The molten metal pool 11 is in contact with the anode 12 which is in turn mounted on a plurality of hangers 13 depending from a beam 14 located across the bath. Two pipes 17, 18 are mounted adjacent to and parallel with the anode 12 each pipe having holes, slits or nozzles 26, 27 at their undersides. The first pipe 17 is connected to a vacuum pump via a manifold 19 so that it removes any metal vapour arising from the pool 11 and the second pipe 18 is connected to a blowing fan or a vacuum pump to form a.gas curtain and thus prevent diffusion of metal vapour. The pipes may be raised or lowered by rack and pinion device 23, 25. The manifold 19 is cooled by water cooled pipes 20. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 1,256,711, 1,256,696, 1,255,008, 1,250,160, 1,211,854 and 1,151,853.
